UBUNTU HUMANITY (BW084)
Ubuntu is an inborn thing with the African race; its meaning is very deep. 'Ubuntu' means: be honest, be accommodative. Share with those in need and pass on what you know to the young. Save life at all cost, respect young and old. Criticise constructively, feed those who are hungry.
'Ubuntu' is the title of Sipho Gumede's second solo album for B&W/M.E.L.T.2000. Predominantly instrumental, it features the cream of South African musicians and many other artists from the Outernational Meltdown, including Pops Mohamed, Madala Kunene, the late Moses Molelekwa, Mabi Thobejane, Barney Bophela and Zim Ncqawane, among many other talented players.

Track Listing (30 Second Samples)

1.
DON'T MESS WITH ME
You lied to me, I won't forget. You lied to yourself, I won't forgive. Make me to forgive, but I won't forget. Don't mess with me 'cause you messing yourself.

2.
TUGELA RIVER

3. UBUNTU
Humanity. Do we still have it? I wonder.

4.
FACE & PLACES
I've travelled, been to places. I've played for many faces. I wonder what the world would be. Without the song that introduces us to faces and places.

5.
TOWNSHIP JIVE
I'm dancing with an invisible partner. Getting rid of a negative energy. I'm jiving my frustration away as long as my feet can carry me. I'm jiving 'cause the township is jiving.

6.
MIKA
The name of a little girl.

7.
ISOMISO (DROUGHT)
Drought is an enemy of mankind. In olden days, African people prayed to Unomkhubulwane, the rain goddess, for rain. When rivers stop flowing, tears start flowing. The soul is separated from the body. We all get affected since we are part of the universe. Let us pray for rain - rain is life.

8.
SANDILE
He was five years old. He thought he had no enemies. How wrong we were. His life was taken just before dawn. Another victim of violence. When will it all end? How many more Sandiles to go before we realise that we have a problem?

9.
HAYI BO
She sat in the dark corner of the house. The moonlight was shining through the door frame. Her eyes facing the floor, sadness written on her face. Children becoming restless, waiting for answers. She knows something is wrong. It is almost midnight; her husband is not back home. He left early in the morning for work as usual. He is a respected man in the community, a family loving man. Two days later she received bad news. He was found covered with newspapers, cold as ice in the city street corner. She just said softly, "Oh No Hayi Bo Hayi Bo".

10.
HAMMERSLADE
They got together, they spoke. They became one - I'm talking about people of Mpumalanga township - true leaders of the nation. Can we afford to fold our arms and turn a blind eye and pretend all is Ok when there is so much violence around us as a nation? No. We should follow the same path of wisdom, just like the mothers and fathers of Mpumalanga. They saved the nation. People of Mpumlanga, you are the shining light of hope. We look up to you as true leaders of the nation. Long live Unwele Olude - peace be with you all. With love and respect we salute you. From all of us: your children, your nation.
'A little bit of everything to keep your feet clapping. there's sweet 'n' soft jazz, songs that sound sacred and soulful tunes like 'Places and Faces'. Sipho is tough and gentle with his music and poetry. The printed lyrics are well worth reading.' DJ Nick, Spirit magazine, July/August 1996
