Graduating from the Royal College of Music in London, James McMillan
started his professional career with Sade, playing trumpet in her band
at the Montreux Jazz festival in 1985 and subsequently appearing on her
album, 'Stronger Than Pride'. The following year he joined Everything But the Girl's
world tour and managed to attend the prestigious Berklee College of
Music in Boston, USA. His string of album and touring credits grew
rapidly to include work with the James Taylor Quartet, Paul Weller, two albums with Everything But the Girl.
The early nineties saw the beginnings of what has proven to be a
diverse solo career when James contributed a track to the Polydor jazz
compilation album, 'A Certain Kind of Freedom' as well as working on
the film score for the movie 'True Colours'.
Albums:
- Ballads
In 1992, he signed a solo
publishing contract with Nippon Television Music in Japan. 1993 saw a
variety of musical projects, including TV and commercial score
compositions and carrying on in the live vein as the featured soloist
with the Mike Westbrook Orchestra at major European
Jazz festivals and playing live with soul legend James Brown He also
remixed Larry 'Mr Fingers' Heard's 'On A Corner Called Jazz' for MCA
and composed, performed and arranged the music for a major Japanese TV
series, 'Jealousy', which was released as a soundtrack album due to
massive public demand in Japan. On the strength of this success,
Toshiba/EMI signed James to record and produce a solo album entitled
'Makin' Changes', released in Japan in 1993, which shows off James' R+B
pedigree and his imaginative use of jazz. He also co-wrote a jazz suite
for the BBC with Kate Westbrook. 1993 also saw James
produce UK hipsters Workshy for Pony Canyon and work with Talkin'
Loud's much lauded rappers, Urban Species, in addition to co-producing
and writing an album with Bob James sideman, Alexander Zonjic,
for Reprise Records. For Denon Records, James produced 'Savoy Remix #1'
(Japanese title-'Crescent Moon') which involved bringing classic jazz
performances from the Savoy jazz catalogues into the 90's by adding new
grooves and performances. This series ws continued in 1995 with 'Savoy
Remix II- The Rematch'. Back in the world of Pop, 1994 saw James
playing and arranging with Van Morrison live and in the studio, and producing a version of Van's 'Crazy Love' for the 'When A Man Loves A Woman' soundtrack starring Andy Garcia and Meg Ryan. He contunues to play, write, arrange, produce and record with an ever-growing list of artists including Eric B and Rakim, Chaka Khan, Kenny Thomas, D-Mob, US3, Incognito, Adam F, Ragga Twins...
Recently he has recorded an R+B record with UK soul outfit, LushLife,
and has been working with pop stars such as Boyzone and Kavana as well
the Irish singer Brian Kennedy and R&B singer Joanna May. In the context of such frenetic activity, James McMillan's
album for M.E.L.T.2000 is something of an indulgence. 'Ballads'(BW109)
is a contemporary 90's homage to the classic ballads albums of the 50's
and 60's; the kind of record they don't make anymore.
