SHAMAN (BW2112)
Christy Doran met Boris Salchak in 1994 in Boswil, Switzerland. Christy, together with the Swiss Percussionist, Mani Neumeier, was leading a workshop in jazz improvisation in which Boris took part. Coming as he does from the southern Siberian republic of Tuva, it is still not clear how Boris got notice of this workshop, but his presence proved to be providential.
Using part of his own compositions, played on
guitar, Christy started the workshop by asking each participant to
demonstrate his or her improvisational ability. When it came to Boris'
turn, he produced an astonishing sound. No one who was there, Christy
included, had ever experienced overtone throatsinging of this kind
before in a jazz context.
The four-day workshop culminated with a concert, the highlight of which
was a performance by Christy, Mani Neumeier and Boris, dressed in full
shamanic regalia.
Christy and Boris performed as a duo in 1996, playing concerts around
Switzerland and Germany, and Christy passed on a DAT recording of one
of these gigs to his old friend, Robert Trunz of M.E.L.T.2000. When he
heard it, Robert suggested Airto Moreira might join the two as a guest,
because he believed that Boris and Airto would share an empathy through
their shamanic backgrounds, enabling both to get closer to the soul of
the music.
This music is based on traditional Tuvan songs and songs composed by
Boris Salchak, or by Boris and Christy Doran, and was recorded at
Livingstone Studios with Engineer, Chris Lewis. A great part of the
music is improvised, with Christy playing electric guitar, Boris
throatsinging and playing traditional Tuvan instruments, and Airto
Moreira contributing his inimatable array of percussive effects.click here to read review
