Recorded in the Kalahari Desert in 1995, this project was initiated by Pops Mohamed, a musician renowned for his dedication to protect and preserve the indigenous tribal music from his homeland. With a philosophy that states "if people don't understand where they come from, there is a hole in the soul", Pops had been trying to find original recordings of the Bushmen music for many years. Unsuccessful in his search he soon realised that he had to go himself.
In 1995 he organised the Khoisan expedition to the Kalahari to record
and preserve the inspiring traditional music of Africa's oldest
inhabitants, the San Bushmen, a resilient tribe of people who have been
abused and dislocated for many years. !Gubi Tietei, tribal elder and
traditional healer and his family hosted the expedition with guests
from the UK Ben Watkins (Juno Reactor), Dick Jewell (cameraman and
documentary maker) and Robert Trunz. The beautiful music captured with
a portable DAT machine and a Soundfield microphone and the amazing
journey had a profound effect on them all. The music gathered there
provided the base for Pops' album How Far Have We Come, but also led to
this raw and undiluted piece of art. The collection of songs and sounds
are an integral part of the San family - their culture and worldview.
Enchanting and hypnotic these include expressions of celebration, the
recalling of memories, humour and healing. Their healing songs are sung
whilst dancing their popular trance dance. This dance is the oldest
form of meditation and enables participants to contact their ancestors
by entering a state of !kia (trance). This spiritual state is
accessible to all, and an integral part of their lives, bringing the
whole community together. !kia is to go into unconsciousness ('half
death'), letting go of your spirit in order to remonstrate with Gauwa
(God).
This pure sound from the depths of the desert is a fascinating glimpse
into the world and music of this most ancient and spiritual of people
who deserve to be heard and respected.
Proceeds from the sale of this CD will help feeding the Tietei
community on the edge of the Kalahari Desert in Namibia. If you want a
