Madala Kunene back in Kutomena

The story of the Kitomena (Cato Manor) forced removals of 1959, Durban, as told through the legendary music of the man who lived to tell this tale, Madala Kunene.

Featuring an all star line-up of musical friends, with the voice of BOY NGEMA as Madala, narrating the real lived history of Durban's own "District Six", this show promises to be a true his-story.

BACK IN KITOMENA
Madala Kunene and friends
Tuesday, May 1st
Umkhumbane Community Hall

"From the setting to the sound, this is a show that captures an untold story in its entirety, from end to end."

South Africans of all generations are familiar with the tragic tales of forced removals, scattered through our history, removals that devastated whole communities and left them in pieces. From Sophiatown to District Six, it is artists who would pick up these pieces years later, and retell the forgotten stories of legendary personalities and places that kept a cultural heart beating inside the body of a wounded country.

It is time for this as yet untold story of Durban to be told.

Join MADALA KUNENE as he returns to the site of his family's forced removal in 1959 from the Umkhumbane community, to make way for what would become present day Cato Manor or "Kitomena". Listen to the music of a man who would, years down the line, meet and befriend the unassuming son of the man who removed his family, and witness as he translates his forgiveness and reconciliation through his craft. This is a true story of the power of music, of the magical community that we are all part of through each song we sing, through each note we play. This is a story that is both unique, and universal, in its ability to translate one mans history into the story of a nation transformed.

At a time in our history when the threat of being torn further apart is constantly looming, these are songs that must be sung, this is a tale that must be told, so that hope can be heard by us all once more.

Set in the heart of "Kitomena", featuring an incredible collective of "Madala's friends", from STEVE NEWMAN to BOY NGEMA, together on stage performing music from his latest album, BACK IN KITOMENA is one night in Durban where history will both be told, and made.
